Here are five indicators, observations or articles that caught the eye of FA futurists today.
- Boston Consulting Group and Liberty Global have released The Value of Our Digital Identity. BCG asserts that this report contains the first-ever attempt to quantify the potential value of personal digital data for companies, individuals, and public agencies — and if true, it is groundbreaking. In addition, BCG conducted a large survey of European consumers to see what makes people actually decide to share — or not — their personal data when they’re engaging in online activities. The findings are valuable and interesting.
- Pirate Party founder Rick Falkvinge is bullish on Bitcoin, anticipating it will increase a thousandfold in the next few years. Of course, that was also a temporarily accurate forecast for Dutch tulip bulbs too…
- A special section in the March 29 issue of Science describes (among other things) how the ability to sequence the genome of individual cells from individual tumors may lead to optimal cancer therapies for individual patients.
- Households that have “cut the cable” or are without TVs that still watch “television” via other screens now have a name: Zero TV. The number of these households in the US has grown from 2 million in 2007 to 5 million today.
- A minor point plot in the upcoming science fiction movie “World War Z” was changed to avoid any problem with Chinese censorship. Growing economic power will drive this kind of accommodation in an ever-expanding list of spheres — and will create issues for companies trying to satisfy divergent audiences.
